ORIENTATION AND MOBILITY: A CHECK LIST OF IMPORTANT SKILLS FOR THOSE GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL

  1. Knows where (s)he can get mobility services after high school (Dept. of Rehab., private consultants, Rose Resnick Lighthouse, other local agencies)

  2. Canes: knows length, manufacturer, approximate cost, where to purchase, type of cane, type of tip

  3. Can give verbal directions to own home, school, etc.

  4. Purchases clothes for inclement weather: raincoat, boots, rimmed hat that will not cover ears.

  5. Purchases backpack.

  6. Sets up low vision examination to determine need for low vision aids (monocular, sunglasses, hand-held magnifiers, sun visors, etc.); can use and care for aids

  7. Can differentiate door keys (if helpful, use key identifiers or Hi Marks), can unlock doors.

  8. Obtain a DMV ID card

  9. Is ADA certified for paratransit and knows how to use it

  10. Can take route notes and follow them to facilitate learning routes quickly (large   print, tape, Braille, electronic note taker, Voice Mate)

  11. Has experience seeking public assistance in a store (see LSC grocery store curriculum) and in seeking travel information.

  12. Knows how to call a taxi, pay and tip a driver
